Preventive Dental Hygiene
Oral Examinations
Regular oral exams, ideally twice a year, can allow your dentist to identify developing oral health problems.
During your exam, the dentist will take a close look at the health of your teeth, gums and jaw. Your exam may also include panoramic X-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures.
Checkups at the dentist combined with diligent care at home not only help preserve your dental health but also help to keep your teeth looking whiter.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can develop in different parts of the mouth and throat. To check for any signs of cancer, your dentist will examine your face, neck, throat, lips and gums. Signs of oral cancer can be difficult to spot when looking in the mirror, which is why a complete examination by your dentist is crucial.
Oral Health Care at Home
To maintain good oral health between dental appointments brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes and floss at least once a day.
Dental Hygiene Cleaning
The dental hygienist performs a complete cleaning of the teeth and gums to prevent and treat dental problems.
First, your hygienist will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Once these have been cleared away, they will use a special tool and gritty toothpaste to polish your teeth. A thorough flossing is the finishing touch, ensuring that your teeth are as clean as can be, above and below the gum line.
Fluoride Treatment
If you or a family member face an increased risk of tooth decay, our dental hygienists may suggest fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help restore tooth enamel, preventing tooth decay or even reversing it.
The fluoride used in these treatments is similar to that found in toothpaste. However, these treatments are formulated with higher concentrations to provide faster and more pronounced results.
